As part of Minnesota’s Shop Local initiative, Amplio’s CEO, Brian McDonald, recently joined Mark Erickson, Regional President of MidWestOne Bank on a visit to Uncommon Loon Brewery in Chisago City, MN. Leading the visit was Chisago County HRA-EDA Executive Director, Nancy Hoffman. Also joining the visit was SBDC State Director Andy Donahue; SBA Deputy District Director, Chris Wicker; and SBA Lead Outreach and Marketing Specialist, Don Michael Jackson. The group met with Co-Owner and Head Brewer, Brad Klatt, to tour the facility.

Uncommon Loon Brewing Company is based in Chisago City, MN. They opened for business in 2019 after getting assistance from the Minnesota Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and using Amplio 504 funding, along with traditional lending from MidWestOne Bank, to purchase their property. Several other community lenders were involved in supporting the business launch. Since then, the brewery has grown a loyal following and recently purchased a canning system for distribution of their products.

Uncommon Loon Brewing Company is attached to a community center, and the entire building is owned by the brewing company. The building itself has historic ties to the community, most recently serving as a fire station owned by the city. It also has a historic ballroom space. The facility is also used by the American Legion and is utilized for various community events, clubs and wedding parties.

The owners were recognized by the U.S. Small Business Administration for being “Encore Entrepreneurs” for the State of Minnesota recognizing them for their success in starting a business after the age of 50. You can learn more about Uncommon Loon Brewing Company at uncommonloonbrewing.com.
